In a notification issued by the Union Home Ministry on Monday, it has been said that the reference date for the census across the country except Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh will be March 1, 2027, while the reference date in snow-affected Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh will be October 1, 2026. This time caste count will also be done in the census.

It is noteworthy that Home Minister Amit Shah had reviewed the preparations for the upcoming census with the Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner and other senior officials on Sunday, a day before the notification was issued.

According to the Home Ministry, the census will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, i.e. House Listing Operation (HLO), details of residential status, assets and amenities of each household will be collected. After this, in the second phase, i.e. Population Enumeration (PE), demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other information of each person in each household will be collected. About 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and about one lakh 30 thousand census workers will be deployed for census activities. This is the 16th census since inception and the 8th census after independence.

The upcoming census will be conducted digitally using a mobile application. Provision for self-enumeration will also be made available to the people. Very stringent data security measures will be implemented to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage.
