Shimla (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant announcement made in the state assembly, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has officially declared the state a "disaster-affected" region due to widespread destruction caused by relentless monsoon rains, landslides, and cloudbursts since August 21.

The Chief Minister stated that multiple districts, including Chamba, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Mandi, Shimla, Kangra, and Hamirpur, have been severely affected. The estimated preliminary loss stands at a staggering ₹3,056 crore, with the most damage recorded to roads, bridges, water supply systems, and power infrastructure.

At least five national highways, including the Chandigarh-Manali four-lane, remain blocked. Over 800 roads across the state are still closed. Schools and colleges were shut in ten districts, including Kullu, on Monday as a safety measure.

Speaking in the House, CM Sukhu said,

“Under the Disaster Management Act, we have instructed state and central agencies to carry out relief, rescue, and reconstruction work on a war footing.” He emphasized that this is not merely a geographical challenge, but a national concern, citing climate change and global warming as major contributors to the recurring natural calamities in hilly regions.

“Our mountains are not just tourist destinations; they are lifelines. Uncontrolled construction must stop. I urge the central government to treat this issue with utmost seriousness,” he added. The Chief Minister also highlighted the extensive damage to homes, livestock, and agriculture, expressing solidarity with affected families.

“Our government stands with every citizen who has suffered loss. We are committed to their full rehabilitation,” said CM Sukhu. Declaring Himachal as a disaster-hit state enables the government to seek additional financial assistance from the central government and other funding sources for rapid recovery, reconstruction, and support for affected individuals.
