New Delhi(The Uttam Hindu):The Indian Army is set to significantly bolster its air defense capabilities with the planned induction of the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) system. The Ministry of Defence is considering the procurement of three QRSAM regiments, in a deal estimated to cost ₹30,000 crore.

Developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the QRSAM system is designed to detect, track, and neutralize aerial threats at short range. With a striking range of up to 30 kilometers, the system can operate effectively both day and night, and can be quickly deployed across various terrains, enhancing its tactical mobility.

What sets QRSAM apart is its ability to track and engage moving targets, offering rapid response to sudden enemy air strikes. It is expected to work in tandem with India's existing air defense assets like the Akash, MRSAM, and S-400 systems, reinforcing the country's layered air defense network.

A high-level defense meeting is expected in the fourth week of June, where final discussions on its induction will take place.

India already fields several air defense platforms, including S-400, Akashteer, and anti-drone systems like Iron Drone, which have been instrumental in thwarting recent threats from across the border, including Chinese missiles and Turkish drones allegedly used by Pakistan. The QRSAM's inclusion is anticipated to be a game-changer for India’s quick-response capabilities, providing an agile shield against modern aerial threats in active combat zones.
