Cruise Tourism to Set Sail on Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi Rivers, Enhancing J&K's Tourism Appeal

Srinagar (The Uttam Hindu): Now passengers will be able to enjoy cruise ships in Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi rivers. The state administration has planned to buy electric-powered cruise ships with a capacity of up to 20 passengers. Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo gave this information while reviewing the process of starting Inland Water Transport (IWT) on major rivers in the state in a high-level meeting.
The meeting, held at the Civil Secretariat, was attended by Chairman Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Additional Chief Secretary, Jal Shakti Department, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Secretary, Tourism Department, Commissioner, Transport Secretary, PWD Secretary and other senior officers of the State Administration. The river systems in Jammu and Kashmir-particularly Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi-connect several districts, providing a unique opportunity to develop a cost-effective, less congested and environment-friendly transport network. The Chief Secretary called for collaborative development of necessary infrastructure, including terminals and electric cruise operations, in coordination with the Tourism, Transport and PWD departments.
Representatives of IWAI presented the findings of their preliminary surveys, which were conducted to assess the feasibility of river stretches for water transport. The surveys identified viable stretches on Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi rivers for IWT operations. It was also underlined that development of inland water transport is in line with the national policy of the Government of India to promote river transport for its comfort, efficiency and pollution-free nature.
