Japan declares epidemic after more than 4,000 people hospitalized

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – Japan is currently in the grip of a rapidly spreading flu infection. The situation has worsened to the point where the government has declared a nationwide flu epidemic. According to local media reports, more than 4,000 patients are hospitalized across the country. The Tokyo, Okinawa, and Kagoshima regions are the worst affected.
The government has temporarily closed more than 130 schools, kindergartens and daycare centers to stem the rapidly spreading infection. Experts say the flu season has begun five weeks earlier than usual, putting additional pressure on Japan's health services.
Infections hit a record high, with
more than 4,000 patients being treated for influenza between September 22 and 28, and surpassing 6,000 between September 29 and October 5. An increase in cases has been recorded in 28 of Japan's 47 prefectures. Experts are also considering this a serious health warning for Asian countries. According to Professor Yoko Tsukamoto of Hokkaido Health Science University, "This year's flu season has started very early. This trend may become common in the future due to the changing global environment."
Hospitals are experiencing a COVID- like
situation again – a shortage of beds, rising cases, and growing fear. Travel analyst Ashley Harvey advised that travelers to Japan should postpone their trips, and if necessary, wear masks and maintain hand hygiene. The flu is also spreading in other Asian countries. Experts said that lessons from the situation in Japan are needed to take precautionary measures.
Vaccination is the best defense.
Health experts said this pandemic situation is due to several factors—including increased international travel after COVID and virus mutations. Doctors recommend that children, the elderly, and those with serious illnesses get the flu vaccine to protect the wider population from this rapid spread of the infection.
