Imphal (The Uttam Hindu) : Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Manipur's Tamenglong district after clashes between two Naga villages over a land dispute left at least 25 people, including 12 security personnel, injured. Officials said the incident took place on Wednesday evening when around 2,000 residents of Tamenglong village were marching towards the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police office to submit a memorandum regarding a land dispute. Following this, residents of Dailong village allegedly threw stones at those who were going to submit the memorandum, leading to a clash. Officials said people from the nearby Duigailong village also joined the clash in support of Dailong.

He said that during the clash, the inspection bungalow of the Public Works Department (PWD) was set on fire. The police fired tear gas shells to control the situation, the official said. Following the clash over land dispute, restrictions have been imposed under Section 163 of the BNS in the district headquarters and border areas of Daelong, Duigailong and Old Tamenglong. The notification said that the restrictions will remain in force until further orders. An official in Imphal said Tamenglong is inhabited by the Naga community and the clashes stemmed from a border dispute between two villages. He said it had no connection with the ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki that began in May 2023.
