Sangrur (The Uttam Hindu): In a significant crackdown, Punjab Police has unearthed a well-organized smuggling racket operating from inside Sangrur Jail, leading to the arrest of the jail's Deputy Superintendent of Police (Security), Gurpreet Singh. The operation began with a raid based on credible intelligence during which officials recovered 9 mobile phones, 4 smartwatches, 50 grams of opium and several other prohibited items from within the prison premises.

Initial inquiries pointed to the involvement of a Class IV jail staffer who was facilitating the movement of these banned items. However, the case took a serious turn when further investigation revealed that DSP Gurpreet Singh was not only complicit but also actively coordinating the smuggling activities. He was found to be receiving illicit payments through UPI accounts linked to his relatives.

Continuing their investigation, police arrested Manpreet Singh from Amritsar — an associate of Gurwinder Singh, a current inmate of Sangrur jail. The search at Manpreet’s location led to the seizure of 4 kg of heroin, 5.5 lakh in drug proceeds, a Glock pistol and live cartridges.

Authorities say the racket had a well-established network both inside and outside the jail, and more arrests are likely as the investigation deepens. The case has raised serious concerns over security and corruption within the prison system.
