Punjab-Haryana SYL Clash Heats Up, CM Mann Visits Nangal Dam

Mohali (The Uttam Hindu): The ongoing water dispute between Punjab and Haryana has become more intense. According to the information, Punjab Chief Minister Mann has suddenly left for Nangal Dam. The reason behind this is that a BBMB official allegedly tried to forcibly release water from Nangal Dam last night, after which the Punjab Police took him into custody.

Let us tell you that on May 5, in the special session of the Punjab Assembly, a unanimous resolution was passed that Haryana will not be given additional water. The resolution also said that such orders should not be imposed on Punjab by the BBMB.

At the same time, while hearing the case on May 7, the High Court had ordered that the Punjab Police personnel should not interfere in the regulation work of Bhakra Nangal Dam and Lohar Control Room and they should be kept away from daily operations. The court had also directed that the decisions of the meeting chaired by the Union Home Secretary should be followed compulsorily.

Although the Punjab government can increase security at the dam, it cannot interfere in technical matters related to its operation. According to sources, the state government has taken a tough stand on the alleged attempt to release water from the dam and the entire incident is being monitored at a high level.

The dispute between Punjab and Haryana over water sharing has been going on for a long time. Haryana alleges that it is not being given enough water of its share, while Punjab argues that the state already has a huge shortage of water and it cannot give additional water.
