Shocking Soup Scandal: Parents Fined ₹2.71 Crore for Drunken Minors' Urination Incident

Beijing (The Uttam Hindu): A Chinese court has fined the parents of two minor teenagers a hefty 2.2 million yuan (approximately Rs 2.71 crore) for their shameful act at a famous Haidilao hotpot restaurant in Shanghai, where the two teenagers, in an inebriated state, urinated into a pot of boiling soup.
The incident occurred on February 24, 2025. Two 17-year-old boys, Wu and Tang, entered a private room of the restaurant while intoxicated, climbed onto a table, and urinated into the boiling soup used to cook vegetables and meat. A video of the entire incident surfaced.
Although there was no evidence that any customers consumed the contaminated soup, the restaurant took extraordinary steps to maintain its reputation and customer trust. Haidilao management compensated over 4,000 customers who visited the restaurant between February 24 and March 8. These customers were not only refunded the full amount of their bills, but also given tenfold additional cash compensation. Additionally, the restaurant destroyed all its utensils, purchased new ones, and deep-cleaned the entire premises.
The company initially sought 23 million yuan (approximately 28 crore rupees) in damages to compensate for the damage to its reputation and the compensation it paid to customers. After hearing the case, the court held the teenagers' parents responsible for their actions and ordered them to pay a fine of 2.2 million yuan.
