Sangrur (The Uttam Hindu): Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has passed away. He breathed his last at Fortis Hospital in Mohali. He was ill for a long time. He died at around 5 pm today. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2019. He parted ways with the Akali Dal in 2020 and was a former patron of the Akali Dal. He was a former MP of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He breathed his last at the age of 89.

Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was born on 9 April 1936 in village Ubhawal district Sangrur. He was an Indian politician, former president of Shiromani Akali Dal (United) and member of Rajya Sabha. Dhindsa first contested elections from Dhanaula assembly constituency as an independent candidate in 1970 and became MLA on the election symbol of Shiromani Akali Dal in 1977 and became Transport Minister. He was close to Prakash Singh Badal. Dhindsa also served as Union Minister of Sports, Chemicals and Fertilizers in the Vajpayee government from 2000 to 2004 and was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004. He was a Lok Sabha member from 2004 to 2009.

He was the former president of Shiromani Akali Dal (United).

In March 2024, he returned by merging his party again with Shiromani Akali Dal.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan on 26 January 2019, but he returned it during the farmers' protest.

His son Parminder Singh Dhindsa was the Finance Minister of Punjab from 2012 to 2017.
