Bengaluru (The Uttam Hindu): Now there is no mercy for those who litter the streets of Greater Bengaluru. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has started a strict and unique campaign against those who throw their household garbage on the road or in public places. Under this initiative, those who are caught throwing garbage on the road, their garbage will be delivered to their homes as a 'return gift'. This has been named "Garbage Dumping Festival" - its aim is to teach a lesson to those who litter the city and create awareness about cleanliness.

'Negligence in cleanliness will no longer be tolerated'

Karigowda, CEO of Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML), said that around 5,000 vehicles in the city collect dry and wet waste separately from homes every day. Despite this, many people do not give up the habit of throwing garbage in the open. He said, "We have increased surveillance through CCTV cameras and have received videos of many people turning the streets into garbage dumps." According to Karigowda, this "return gift policy" has been implemented to increase awareness and maintain discipline. Sanitation workers will return the same garbage to the homes of those who throw garbage on the streets, and a fine of ₹2,000 will also be imposed.

This unique campaign is generating considerable discussion on social media. Some are calling it a step to strengthen the spirit of "Clean India," while others are considering it a harsh action. Karigowda said, "This is not a strange activity. Our employees are going door-to-door teaching people how to segregate waste. Awareness is also being spread through social media." To maintain the city's cleanliness, officials have also started installing large dustbins in many areas. CCTV cameras are also being used to continuously monitor areas where people dump garbage in the open. Karigowda said, "Bengaluru is a 'Garden City,' and it is every citizen's responsibility to maintain its beauty."
