Punjab-Haryana High Court's Historic Verdict: Soldier Killed by Fellow Soldier's bullet Still a Martyr

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Punjab and Haryana High Court has decided that if a soldier dies during a military operation due to a bullet shot by his own colleague, he will still get the status of 'war martyr'
The bench of Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal and Justice Deepak Manchanda gave this order while dismissing the petition in which the central government had claimed that the pension claim by the soldier's mother was made too late, so it cannot be accepted. The case is related to Rukmani Devi, whose son died on 21 October 1991 after being shot by a fellow soldier during 'Operation Rakshak' in Jammu and Kashmir.
His family will get the same benefits as are given to the families of soldiers martyred in war. He had applied for liberalized family pension in 2018. The Center said that the application has been filed with a delay of 25 years, which is unacceptable. However, the High Court refused to accept that the delay could eliminate the right to benefits in this case.
