New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) : Every day, news of suicide by students keeps coming from Kota, Rajasthan. Regarding this matter, the Supreme Court has now reprimanded the state government and described the situation as serious. State government reprimanded A bench of Justices JP Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said that so far this year, 14 cases of suicide have been reported from the city. Justice Pardiwala asked the lawyer appearing for the state government, what are you doing as a state?"Why are these children committing suicide and why only in Kota? Have you not thought about this as a state?" the judge asked. However, the lawyer replied that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been formed in the state to investigate the suicide cases.

Let us tell you, the Supreme Court was hearing the case of the death of a student studying in IIT Kharagpur. On May 4, the student was found hanging from a noose in his hostel room. Another case was also heard, in which a girl was about to take the NEET exam and she was found hanging in her room in Kota. The girl lived with her parents.SC raised questions on the delay in filing FIR The Supreme Court bench found that an FIR was registered in the case of the IIT Kharagpur student, but the Supreme Court also questioned the four-day delay in filing the FIR on May 8. The bench said, "Do not take these things lightly. These are very serious matters."

The bench cited the Supreme Court's March 24 verdict, which had taken note of the frequent cases of student suicides in higher educational institutions and had constituted a national task force to address mental health concerns of students and prevent such incidents. The bench said that it is necessary to register an FIR immediately in such cases. The bench asked the concerned police officer present in the court, "Why did it take you four days to register an FIR?" However, the police officer said that the FIR has been registered and investigation is being done.

What instructions did the bench give?

IIT Kharagpur authorities informed the police after coming to know about the suicide.

The bench was not satisfied with the explanation given by the counsel for IIT Kharagpur and the police officer.

"We could have taken a very strict view of the matter. We could have even initiated a contempt case against the police officer in charge of the jurisdictional police station," the bench said.

The bench refrained from saying anything about the registration of the FIR and the progress of the investigation.

The bench said that the investigation should be carried out quickly in the right direction.

In the Kota suicide case, the bench termed not registering an FIR as wrong.
