New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) : Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday, June 21, announced to increase the monthly pension given to old, disabled and widowed women under the state's social security pension scheme from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100. This decision will come into effect from July, which will directly benefit 1,09,69,255 pension beneficiaries of the state.

This announcement of the Chief Minister has come just before the Bihar Assembly elections proposed later this year. The Chief Minister wrote on Twitter (formerly Twitter), "I am happy to inform that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all the elderly, Divyaangjan and widow women will now get a pension of Rs 1100 instead of Rs 400 every month. All the beneficiaries will get pension at the increased rate from the month of July. This amount will be ensured to be sent to the account of all the beneficiaries on the 10th of the month. This will help 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries a lot. He said, "The elderly are a precious part of the society and ensuring their respectable living is our top priority. The state government will continue to strive in this direction." Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary thanked the Chief Minister, calling this decision a historic day. He said, "Today is a historic day because the Chief Minister has increased the pension of widows, elderly and Divyaang. I thank the Chief Minister for this."
