New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): If you are a taxpayer and have recently received an email from the Income Tax Department regarding 'high value transactions', there is no need to panic. The Income Tax Department had sent emails containing incorrect information to several taxpayers, causing widespread panic. The Income Tax Department has now clarified the situation. Acknowledging its major technical error, the department apologized to taxpayers through an official social media post on Saturday.

The department admitted the technical error and expressed regret for the inconvenience

The Income Tax Department, in a post on its official account, stated that it has come to its attention that several taxpayers have received emails containing incorrect information as part of the ongoing Advance Tax e-Campaign for Assessment Year 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26). The department thanked taxpayers for pointing out this error and regretted the significant inconvenience caused. The department clarified that it is working proactively with its service provider to resolve this technical glitch as soon as possible to prevent a similar situation from occurring in the future.

Appeal to ignore old emails, explained why messages were sent

With this clarification, the Income Tax Department has urged all taxpayers to completely ignore old emails related to advance tax for assessment year 2026-27. The department stated that these emails were not intended to be a direct action, but were sent solely as a convenience and reminder. The primary purpose was to enable taxpayers to properly review their financial information available on the compliance portal and ensure timely compliance with appropriate advance tax rules, where necessary.

What should taxpayers do now? The department has issued this important advice

To address the confusion surrounding the receipt of incorrect emails, the Income Tax Department has issued a crucial piece of advice to taxpayers. Instead of blindly trusting emails, the department has advised taxpayers to visit the compliance portal directly. Taxpayers can log in to the compliance portal through the e-filing portal and click on the "e-campaign" tab to verify the correct and accurate details of their transactions. This will help avoid any discrepancies or penalties.
