India Implements Four Labour Codes: Ministers Call It a Historic Reform

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Industry body NASSCOM and several Union Ministers on Friday praised the Central Government’s decision to implement all four Labour Codes across the country. The ministers described this move as a major step towards ensuring a safe and dignified workplace. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal called the implementation of the labour codes a new chapter in labour reforms. In a post on X, he said that the four labour codes introduced under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership will empower workers, strengthen the ease of doing business, and promote secure and respectful work environments.

Goyal added that these reforms will create new opportunities for women and young people, while also supporting the vision of a “Developed India”. Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports Mansukh Mandaviya said the decision is not just a reform, but a historic step taken by Prime Minister Modi for the welfare of workers. He also shared details of the reforms in his post on X.

Mandaviya explained that the new codes guarantee timely payment of minimum wages, appointment letters for young employees, social security for 40 crore workers, equal pay and dignity for women, gratuity for fixed-term employees after one year, double wages for overtime, 100% health security for workers in hazardous sectors, global standards of social justice, and annual free health check-ups for workers above the age of 40. He said the reforms are a crucial step toward building an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” and will play a vital role in achieving the goal of Developed India 2047.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri described the new labour reforms as the foundation of a developed India. In a post on X, he said the reforms will bring significant improvements in workers’ lives and accelerate India’s journey toward development. NASSCOM also welcomed the move, calling it an important milestone in modernizing India’s labour framework.

According to NASSCOM, the new codes will allow business leaders to transition to the updated framework in a structured and smooth manner. From an economic perspective, the codes strengthen social security, improve workplace safety and health standards, and clearly define salary and employment conditions.
