PAN card worry? Fix name & address errors online in minutes - fraud can lead to jail time

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): In today's digital age, a PAN card isn't just a piece of paper, but rather the key to your financial well-being. Whether it's joining a new job, investing in the stock market, or filing your Income Tax Return (ITR)—these tasks are nearly impossible without a PAN card. However, trouble arises when your name, address, or date of birth are misspelled on this essential document.
People often run around government offices and agents to correct even minor errors. But now you don't need to worry. You can make corrections to your PAN card online from the comfort of your home.
These two websites will get the work done in minutes
The Income Tax Department has implemented online corrections for the convenience of PAN card holders. If there is an error on your card, you can apply by visiting the official website of NSDL or UTIITSL. This process is completely transparent, saving you both time and money to pay agents.
Step-by-Step: How to make online corrections
Follow the procedure given below to change the name, address or date of birth in PAN card:
1. Visit the website: First, visit the official website of NSDL or UTIITSL. Click on the 'Changes/Correction in PAN' option.
2. Fill the form: Now a form will open, in which fill the basic information like your PAN number, name, date of birth and email ID.
3. Save the token number: Once you submit your information, a unique 15-digit token number will be generated. Note it down for future reference.
4. Select an option: Now select the option you want to change. For example, if the name is incorrect, tick the 'Name' box and enter the correct name.
5. Upload documents: Upload address proof, date of birth proof, scanned photo and signature to prove your identity.
6. Fees and Submission: Finally, pay the required fees online and submit the form. Don't forget to download the 'Acknowledgement Slip', which will help you track your status.
Caution: Forging documents will lead to jail time
While making corrections or getting a new PAN card made, provide only correct information. Taking shortcuts or submitting fake documents can prove costly for you. According to media reports, the culprit can be jailed for up to 6 months and fined Rs 10,000 for making a fake PAN card. Since the PAN card information is with the Income Tax Department, the department can take strict legal action in case of fraud in any financial transaction. According to UIDAI rules, there is a provision of 3 years imprisonment and fine of up to Rs 10,000 for making a fake Aadhaar card.
