Planning to carry alcohol during air travel? know these important rules to avoid trouble at the airport

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Many air travellers remain confused about whether alcohol can be carried on a flight and, if allowed, in what quantity. Conflicting claims on social media often add to the uncertainty. Clarifying these doubts, wine expert Sonal Holland has explained that passengers are permitted to carry alcohol during air travel, but only by strictly following specific quantity and packaging rules.
According to Sonal Holland, passengers must clearly understand that rules for cabin baggage and check-in baggage are different. In cabin or hand baggage, liquids are restricted to a maximum of 100 millilitres per container during domestic air travel in India. This means alcohol bottles larger than 100 ml are not allowed in the cabin.
However, passengers get more flexibility with check-in baggage. Travellers can carry up to 5 litres of alcohol in their checked luggage. This includes spirits such as whisky, vodka, gin or rum. In simple terms, up to five bottles of one litre each can be packed in check-in baggage.
Alcohol content and packaging are equally important. The alcohol by volume (ABV) of the liquor being carried must not exceed 70 percent. Bottles with higher alcohol concentration are not permitted. For safety reasons, bottles must be properly sealed to prevent leakage due to pressure changes during the flight. Ideally, alcohol should be in original retail packaging. If not, bottles must be securely wrapped using bubble wrap or soft clothing.
Passengers should also keep baggage weight limits in mind. The 5-litre allowance does not mean exceeding the airline’s permitted baggage weight. If the total weight crosses the allowed limit due to alcohol bottles, extra charges may apply or passengers may be asked to remove items.
Experts say alcohol is not completely banned during air travel, but proper planning and strict adherence to rules are essential to avoid inconvenience at the airport.
