Sent Money to the Wrong UPI Account? Here's How You Can Get It Back

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Unified Payments Interface i.e. UPI has revolutionized the way we transact. Now money can be sent in a blink of an eye just by scanning a QR code or entering a mobile number. But with this facility, sometimes there is a risk of making mistakes in haste, like sending money to the wrong number or wrong account. If this happens to you too, then there is no need to panic. By taking the right step at the right time, you can get your money back.
Take these steps immediately if a mistake occurs
If you have accidentally made a UPI payment to the wrong person, follow the steps given below without delay:
1. First of all, complain in the app.
Immediately open the UPI app (like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm) from which you have made the payment. Go to the transaction history of the app and see the details of the wrong payment. Note down the transaction ID (UTR) number from here. After this, go to the 'Help' or 'Customer Support' section given in the app itself and report this wrong transaction and register your complaint.
2. Contact your bank
If complaining on the app does not resolve the issue, the next step is to contact your bank. You can visit your nearest bank branch or call the bank's customer care number. Provide the bank with all the details like transaction date, time and UTR number. Your bank will inform the bank of the person whose account has been wrongly credited with money and request for refund.
3. Register your complaint on NPCI portal
UPI in India is operated by National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI). If you are not getting any help from your bank or UPI app, you can directly register your complaint by visiting the official website of NPCI.
4. Take help of the police
If the amount sent is very large and the money is not being returned, then you can also lodge a complaint at your nearest police station or cyber crime cell. For this, you should have a screenshot of the payment, transaction ID and all other necessary details.
Caution is also important.
The best way to avoid any kind of loss is to be cautious. Always double-check the mobile number or account number while sending money. When scanning the QR code, confirm the name of the person receiving the payment. Remember, the sooner you take action in case of a mistake, the greater the chances of getting the money back.
