US Appeals Court Strikes Down Trump’s Tariffs as Illegal, Calls Presidential Powers Limited

New York (The Uttam Hindu): In a landmark decision shaking up US politics and economy, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that most tariffs imposed under former President Donald Trump were illegal. The court clarified that while the President holds emergency powers, these do not extend to imposing taxes or tariffs.
The ruling marks a significant blow to Trump’s economic policies. However, the court ordered that the tariffs remain in effect until October 14, giving the Trump administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court.
Reacting sharply, Trump dismissed the court’s decision, calling it “wrong and biased.” Taking to Truth Social, he declared, “All tariffs are still in place. This biased appeals court wrongly said they should be removed, but in the end, America will win. If tariffs are lifted, it will be a disaster for the country.”
Trump also highlighted trade deficits and what he called “unfair foreign tariffs” hurting American farmers, industries, and workers. He insisted that tariffs were the backbone of protecting “Made in America” companies and boosting domestic jobs.
“For years, careless politicians allowed tariffs to work against us. Now, with Supreme Court support, we will enforce them in America’s interest and make our nation strong again,” Trump added.
The appeals court’s ruling directly impacts the reciprocal tariffs imposed in April and those levied on China, Canada, and Mexico in February. However, tariffs on steel and aluminum imports remain unaffected by this judgment. The decision has triggered intense political debate, as Trump continues to make tariffs a cornerstone of his 2024 campaign, while opponents argue the policy risks global trade disruptions.
