YouTube Tests New Chat Feature: Share Videos and Talk with Friends Inside the App

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): YouTube has restarted testing its private in-app messaging feature after six years. The company has begun rolling out a new video-sharing and chat tool for users aged 18 and above in Ireland and Poland. Those included in the test can share long-form videos, Shorts, and livestreams directly within the YouTube mobile app and discuss them in real time. This will make content sharing easier, as users will no longer need to switch to apps like WhatsApp or Instagram.
According to YouTube’s support page, the new feature opens a full-screen chat window when users tap the share button on the app. From there, users can send videos, start one-on-one or group chats, and reply using text, emojis, or other videos. The company says the test was launched in response to one of its most requested features.
For now, the rollout is limited and includes strict safety measures. All messages must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. The platform may scan or review messages that appear suspicious or potentially harmful. Before starting a chat, users must accept an invite. They can also block channels, report chats, and unsend messages. Message alerts will appear along with other YouTube notifications.
YouTube had shut down its previous messaging system in 2019. While the company never shared the official reason, child safety concerns were widely believed to be a major factor. The new feature is being tested only for adult users to reduce risk and understand how people interact with it.
Based on the results of the trial, YouTube may expand the feature to more countries. Testing in limited regions allows the company to operate in a controlled environment while complying with strict digital safety rules. Earlier this year, Spotify also introduced a private messaging feature. Both platforms are trying to keep users within their apps by offering tools for content sharing and conversations.
