Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu) : The Chandigarh administration is rapidly moving towards making the city completely slum-free. After clearing the slums in the Club area, the administration is now focusing on the Dhanas Kachhi Colony, considered the city's last major illegal slum.

According to reports, the Estate Department has already prepared to demolish over 800 slums spread across approximately 10 acres of land. These slums were temporarily built on farmers' private land, where illegal occupation had persisted for years. According to officials, there's a greater chance of a court stay if an eviction drive is carried out during the winter. Therefore, the demolition process will begin after winter so that the action can be completed without any legal hurdles.

4 slums have been removed, more than 520 acres of land has been freed

The Chandigarh Administration has been running a special campaign against illegal encroachments and unplanned settlements in the city for the last several years. In this series, four major slum areas have been removed so far and approximately 520-528 acres of government land has been freed from encroachers. This campaign is not only important for the protection of government land, but is also playing a vital role in giving a systematic direction to the future planning, infrastructure and urban development of the city.

The crackdown on illegal colonies continues

The administration has identified and demolished several unauthorized colonies in recent years. These colonies had developed without approval, maps, and basic amenities, negatively impacting the city's infrastructure, traffic, security and sanitation.
