Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Taking stern action against indiscipline in the legal fraternity, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana (BCPH) has suspended the licenses of two lawyers, Ravneet Kaur and Simranjit Singh Blasi accused of assaulting fellow advocates and brandishing a sword on the High Court premises. The incident has created shockwaves across the legal community prompting lawyers to suspend work on Thursday in protest.

The Bar Council’s Special Disciplinary Committee described the episode as “extremely serious misconduct,” stating that the accused lawyers openly attacked office bearers and members of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) insulted the institution and used abusive language against lawyers and judges. The committee added that repeated actions of such nature bring disrepute to the judicial system and undermine the dignity of the court. Notices have been issued to both lawyers, who have been directed to appear before the committee on September 19.

Police have also registered an FIR against Ravneet Kaur and Simranjit Singh Blasi under multiple sections of the IPC including 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 109(1) (attempt to murder), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (common intention).

The HCBA Executive Committee alleged that on September 17, Ravneet Kaur falsely claimed before the Chief Justice that her bag and laptop had been confiscated by the Bar Secretary. Following this, she and Blasi allegedly stormed into the Bar office, creating chaos, assaulting colleagues and pushing lawyers during the altercation.

The situation escalated when Simranjit Singh Blasi was seen roaming the premises with a sword and allegedly attacking the Bar Secretary and other lawyers. This shocking act triggered widespread panic and fear across the High Court complex leading to a call for strict disciplinary and legal measures.
