Chandigarh(The Uttam Hindu): The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday heard the petition challenging the arrest of a senior political figure and former Punjab minister. During the hearing, the leader's legal team requested four weeks' time to amend the petition. The court accepted the request, and the matter has now been scheduled for further hearing on August 26.

The arrest, which took place on June 25 in Amritsar by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, stems from serious allegations of possessing assets disproportionate to known sources of income. The former minister is not new to legal battles — back in 2021, under the previous Congress government, he was booked under the NDPS Act in a high-profile drug case.

In that earlier case, statements from six key witnesses, including a former DGP and a former ED deputy director, have already been recorded.

Meanwhile, multiple properties linked to the accused across Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh have been raided. Authorities claim to have solid evidence against him. However, the legal team has denounced the charges as politically motivated and lacking factual grounding. As the case unfolds, all eyes are now on the August 26 hearing, where the court may decide the next legal course.
