New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Significant news has emerged from Delhi University (DU) concerning students and student organizations. Fearing a law and order situation, the DU administration has taken strict action and imposed a complete ban on any kind of protest on campus for one month. Following this order, no public meetings, processions, demonstrations, or protests will be allowed within the university campus for the next one month.
Proctor's Office issued strict orders
The university's Proctor's Office issued an official order in this regard on February 17th. The administration stated that this ban was imposed based on inputs indicating that unrestrained crowd gatherings on campus could escalate the situation and seriously impact law and order. The order also cites a previous directive from the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Civil Lines, which stated a ban on public meetings and inflammatory speeches to maintain public peace and smooth traffic flow. DU Proctor Manoj Kumar clarified in his statement that organizers have repeatedly failed to control their own protests, resulting in violent crowds and a deterioration of the campus atmosphere.
There will be a complete ban on these activities
The rules have been made very clear in this order issued by the administration. According to the new directives, gatherings of five or more people on campus are now strictly prohibited. Additionally, any kind of sloganeering, speeches, or carrying anything flammable or dangerous, such as torches and flashlights, is also completely prohibited. The administration has clarified that this ban is effective immediately and will remain in place for a full month unless a new order is issued and lifted.
This action was taken after recent violent clashes
The Delhi University administration has taken this tough decision following some recent major controversies on campus. Just last week, a protest broke out between two different student groups, prompting Delhi Police to intervene and file two FIRs. A major controversy also erupted on February 12th when someone threw a bucket of water on renowned historian Irfan Habib while he was speaking on stage during a social justice program. In light of these increasingly deteriorating conditions, this one-month ban has been imposed.
