Major administrative overhaul: Delhi to have 13 districts instead of 11, names to be changed

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – A major reshuffle is underway in Delhi's administrative structure. Preparations are underway to increase the number of districts in the capital. The current 11 districts will soon be replaced by 13. The government has given in-principle approval to this proposal, but the Lieutenant Governor is yet to give final approval.
The government believes that the creation of new districts is essential given Delhi's growing population, administrative needs, and rapid urban expansion. This will not only expedite government operations but also provide more accessible services to ordinary citizens.
What will change?
Districts will be delimited based on municipal zones so that people don't have to run around to different offices. The names of several districts will also be changed.
– The Sadar zone will be replaced by the Old Delhi district.
– The East and Northeast districts on the Yamuna riverside will be renamed Shahdara North and Shahdara South.
– Civil Lines and Old Delhi will become separate districts.
– Parts of the southern and western zones will be included in the Najafgarh district.
The list of new districts includes
Old Delhi, Defence Central, New Delhi, Civil Lines, Karol Bagh, Keshav Puram, Narela, Najafgarh, Rohini, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, South Delhi, and West Delhi.
Thirteen mini-secretariats will be created in these districts to provide all services under one roof. The number of subdivision offices will increase from 33 to 39.
Why is this change necessary?
Until now, there was confusion regarding municipal zones and districts. Large districts required people to travel long distances. The new structure will save both time and resources.
