NCR likely to get relief from pollution after January 23, rain and strong winds alert issued

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): There is relief in sight for people suffering from pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR). According to the weather department’s forecast, a change in weather conditions after January 23 is expected to significantly improve air quality across the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for thunderstorms, rain, and strong winds, which are likely to help clear pollutants from the air. As per IMD, on January 23, the maximum temperature in NCR is expected to be around 20 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may remain close to 10 degrees Celsius.
Rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely throughout the day. The department has warned of storms, lightning, and strong winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km per hour at different times—morning, afternoon, evening, and night.
On January 24, temperatures are expected to drop further after the weather change. The maximum temperature may remain around 20 degrees Celsius, while the minimum could fall to about 7 degrees Celsius. Moderate fog is also likely on this day.
Meanwhile, moderate fog conditions are expected to continue in NCR on January 21 and 22, though no specific weather warning has been issued for these days. At present, air quality in NCR remains in the very poor category.
In Noida, the AQI was recorded at 352 in Sector 1, 341 in Sector 116, 328 in Sector 125, and 322 in Sector 62. Delhi also continues to face severe pollution levels, with AQI readings of 387 in Rohini, 391 in Jahangirpuri, 375 in RK Puram, 370 in Punjabi Bagh, 368 in Pusa, 365 in Patparganj, and 366 at ITO.
In Ghaziabad, the situation is even more alarming. AQI reached 423 in Loni, placing it in the severe category. Vasundhara recorded 381, Indirapuram 341, and Sanjay Nagar 319.
Experts believe that rain and strong winds will reduce pollution levels, but intense cold conditions may trouble people for the next two to three days. The weather department has advised citizens to remain cautious, limit outdoor activities, and take necessary precautions against the cold.
