Noida (The Uttam Hindu): Air pollution in Delhi and the entire National Capital Region (NCR) has once again reached alarming levels. For the past 24 days, pollution has remained consistently severe, making daily life extremely difficult. Several parts of Delhi, along with Noida and Ghaziabad, have recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) above 400, placing them in the ‘severe’ category.

Data from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows a worrying trend. Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 400, while Ashok Vihar stood at 385, Bawana at 389, Delhi Technological University at 396, and Wazirpur reported similarly dangerous levels.

Areas like Pusa, RK Puram, Shadipur, Siri Fort, Sonia Vihar, Sri Aurobindo Marg and Vivek Vihar are also facing severe pollution. The situation is equally concerning in Noida. Sector-125 and Sector-116 recorded AQI levels of 418 and 413 respectively, both categorised as ‘severe’. Sector-1 stood at 373 and Sector-62 at 352. In Greater Noida, Knowledge Park-V reported the worst level with an AQI of 421, while Knowledge Park-III recorded 339.

Health experts have warned that prolonged exposure to such poor air quality can cause respiratory illnesses. Major areas of Ghaziabad like Indirapuram, Loni, Sanjay Nagar and Vasundhara are also experiencing dangerous pollution levels. Indirapuram recorded the highest AQI in the district at 407. Hospitals are reporting a steady rise in cases of breathing problems, asthma, allergies and lung-related diseases. Doctors have advised children, the elderly and people with existing respiratory issues to take extra precautions.

Weather conditions are also worsening the crisis. Low wind speed and fluctuating temperatures are trapping pollutants close to the ground. According to IMD, no significant weather change is expected in the coming week, reducing the chances of any immediate improvement.

Citizens have been advised to step outside only when necessary, wear masks and use air purifiers at home. Experts say that urgent emergency measures are needed from the government and concerned agencies to reduce the growing health risk.
