Sisters Worship Yama to Protect Brothers from Untimely Death at Mathura Temple

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The bond between brothers and sisters is considered sacred in India, celebrated nationwide during Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj. In Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, a unique temple draws brothers and sisters specifically on Bhai Dooj for darshan (worship) and holy bathing. Devotees from different states come to seek blessings from Maa Yamuna.
The temple, known as Yamuna Dharmaraj Mandir, symbolizes the brother-sister relationship. It is believed that siblings visiting this temple are protected from untimely death, and the brother enjoys a long life. This is the first temple in India where Yamraj (God of Death) is worshiped alongside Maa Yamuna. The temple features unique idols of Maa Yamuna and Yamraj, where Maa Yamuna’s hand is raised in the air, symbolically tilak-ing Yamraj.
Legend says that on Bhai Dooj, Yamraj himself visited Maa Yamuna, who welcomed him with 56 different offerings. Pleased by her hospitality, Yamraj asked for a blessing. Maa Yamuna prayed that any brother-sister who bathes in the Yamuna and visits the temple on Bhai Dooj will never face hell or untimely death. Yamraj granted this wish, and ever since, devotees come in large numbers to Yamuna Ghat for a holy bath and temple darshan on Bhai Dooj.
It is also believed that Lord Krishna rested at this ghat, and Yamraj came to meet him. Krishna blessed the place, allowing Yamraj to be worshiped at the ghat, further sanctifying the temple.
