Indore (The Uttam Hindu): A worrying trend is emerging in urban India, where weddings are increasingly being cancelled at the final stage — and social media is being identified as a major trigger.

According to recent local reports, more than 150 weddings were called off in Indore within a span of just 40 days. Wedding planners and venue managers say many of these cancellations happened days before the ceremony, despite full preparations being completed.

Data shared by event organisers suggests that around 60–65% of last-minute wedding cancellations were linked to social media-related disputes. Old posts, past relationships, hidden online interactions, and even friend lists became flashpoints, leading to arguments that ultimately broke engagements.

In several cases, partners reportedly discovered undisclosed past affairs or misleading online histories during pre-wedding events such as photo shoots and family functions. These revelations escalated into conflicts, forcing families to cancel weddings overnight.

The trend has also caused a major financial hit to the wedding industry. Hotel and event associations estimate losses of nearly ₹25 crore, affecting banquet halls, caterers, decorators, musicians, and planners who had already received advance bookings and completed arrangements.

Relationship experts say this reflects a shift in how trust is built today. Increased scrutiny of digital behaviour before marriage is now influencing decisions that were once driven mainly by families and tradition.

The data makes one thing clear — social media is no longer just personal space; it has become a decisive factor in modern marriages, powerful enough to stop weddings before they begin.
