Film director Ranjith arrested in sexual harassment case, police take major action

Kochi (The Uttam Hindu): Renowned film director Ranjith was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a sexual harassment complaint filed by a young actress. The case has been handled with a high level of confidentiality by the police.

The case was registered by the Ernakulam Central Police, and a special team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Kochi carried out the arrest. The operation was conducted under the instructions of senior officials, including the IG of Ernakulam Range and the Superintendent of Police, Idukki.

Based on mobile location tracking, the accused was intercepted and taken into custody in Thodupuzha. He is currently in local police custody and will be handed over to Kochi police for further legal proceedings.

Allegations by actress

The complainant, a young actress working in a film directed by Ranjith, alleged that he attempted to sexually harass her during the shooting. According to initial information, the incident took place on the film set, where the director allegedly behaved in an inappropriate and objectionable manner.

The film was being shot in Kottayam and Kochi, with the alleged incident reported to have occurred in Kochi. The actress had submitted a complaint to senior police officials, including the Director General of Police.

Her confidential statement was recorded at a women’s police station two days prior to the arrest, after which swift action was taken by authorities.

Legal action and past allegations

An FIR has been registered under Section 376 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Udayamperoor Police Station. The case was initially kept confidential.

Ranjith, who is known as a director, actor, and writer, has previously faced similar allegations. A Bengali actress had earlier accused him, and another case involving alleged unnatural sexual misconduct had also surfaced.

Police investigations are ongoing, and further developments are expected.
