Ex-BJP MP Kirron Kher Served ₹12.7 Lakh Notice for Unpaid Govt House Licence Fee

Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): Former BJP MP from Chandigarh, Kirron Kher has been served a notice demanding payment of ₹12.76 lakh in outstanding licence fee dues for a government-allotted accommodation she occupied during her tenure as a Member of Parliament. The notice was issued by the Office of the Chandigarh Assistant Controller (F-&A) Rents for House No. T-6/23, located in Sector-7, Chandigarh.
The dues reportedly include penalties ranging from 100 to 200 times the standard rate. The central government charges a nominal licence fee for residential accommodations under the general and departmental pools to facilitate MPs, and the amount is considerably lower than market rents. In Kher’s case, the accumulated charges have now reached several lakhs, prompting the notice.
According to officials, the notice was issued on June 24, 2025 and sent to her present residence in Sector 8-A. The letter instructed her to clear the dues without delay. If not paid, a 12 per cent annual interest will be levied on the amount. Payment can be made through bank transfer or demand draft with payment details available from the cashier’s office.
Local Congress leader Harmohinder Singh Lucky has appealed to the administration to show leniency considering Kher’s poor health during the latter part of her term. He urged that penalties be reconsidered on humanitarian grounds, stating that not all issues should be approached purely from a financial perspective.
Meanwhile, city residents and civic activists have called for equal application of rules. Several compared Kher's case to strict enforcement actions by the Chandigarh Housing Board, including evictions of defaulters from Dhanas rehabilitation flats and removal of vendors from the city’s furniture market, where little leniency was shown.
The situation has triggered a wider debate on fairness and transparency in the enforcement of housing policies for public officials and common cit
izens alike.
