Former MP and actress Mimi Chakraborty reaches ED office in Delhi for questioning in betting app case

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and Bengali film actress Mimi Chakraborty was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case related to illegal betting app. Following this summons, Mimi Chakraborty reached the ED headquarters in Delhi on Monday, where she will be questioned.
Mimi Chakraborty's name is linked to an online betting platform, which has serious allegations like money laundering and tax evasion. ED suspects that Mimi Chakraborty has done promotional content related to the app, which attracted people to invest in it. This is the reason why the agency is now investigating her association with this platform and the money transactions related to it.
In this entire case, ED has questioned not only Mimi Chakraborty but also many other big names and will continue to do so. In this connection, summons have also been sent to Bollywood actress Urvashi Rautela. She has been asked to appear at the ED's Delhi headquarters on September 16. Urvashi Rautela was also seen in some advertisements and promotions of this app.
The ED wants to know how much money was paid in exchange for these promotions and whether they were used to attract people towards this illegal app.
Earlier, former cricketer Suresh Raina was also summoned in this case and was questioned in August. Shikhar Dhawan has also been summoned this month. The names of Telugu film industry actors Rana Daggubati and Prakash Raj also surfaced in this case.
Rana Daggubati clarified that he had nothing to do with any such platform after 2017. Prakash Raj also admitted that he promoted a betting app in 2016, which was legal at that time, but now he considers it against his morals.
This whole matter started with an FIR lodged in Miyapur police station of Hyderabad. Fanindra Sharma, a businessman living there, had complained that big celebrities and influencers on social media are promoting illegal betting apps, due to which lakhs of people are investing money in it and suffering financial losses.
The government has recently said that it has ordered the blocking of more than 1,500 online betting and gambling platforms from 2022 till now. This investigation of ED is also considered important because it involves big film stars and cricketers, whose statements have a deep impact on the common people.
