Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): Irish actress Jessie Buckley has carved a special place in the hearts of audiences with her remarkable versatility, bold performances and singing talent. Recently, she created history by winning the prestigious Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in the film Hamnet.

This is Buckley’s first Academy Award, and she has become the first Irish actress to win in this category. In the film, she portrayed Agnes, the wife of William Shakespeare. Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao, is a historical drama based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. The film focuses on the lives of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife Agnes Hathaway (Jessie Buckley) as they cope with deep grief and family turmoil following the untimely death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet.

Buckley’s performance in the film was widely praised by both audiences and critics. The role required emotional restraint and depth, portraying the inner struggle and resilience of the character. Much of the film’s emotional weight rested on her performance.

After winning the award, Buckley appeared deeply emotional. She broke down in tears while walking toward the stage and addressed the audience while trying to compose herself, expressing gratitude to her team.

The film Hamnet, directed by Chloé Zhao, has also received several prestigious awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards. It also won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Outstanding British Film award at the 79th British Academy Film Awards.

Jessie Buckley began her career in 2008 when she first appeared on the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything. She later transitioned from theatre to films and gained recognition for her roles in Wild Rose (2018), Chernobyl (2019), I’m Thinking of Ending Things (2020), and The Lost Daughter (2021).

Over the years, Buckley has received several prestigious honours for her work. In 2022, she won a BAFTA Award for Wild Rose and also received an Academy Award nomination for The Lost Daughter, though she did not win the Oscar at that time.
