Ranveer Singh’s ‘Dhurandhar’ Faces Legal Trouble: Major Mohit Sharma’s Parents Seek Ban

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Ranveer Singh’s upcoming film Dhurandhar, directed and written by Aditya Dhar, has run into legal trouble even before its release. The parents of Ashok Chakra awardee, Shaheed Major Mohit Sharma, have filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding that the film be stopped from releasing. The movie is scheduled to hit theatres on 5 December.
According to Major Mohit Sharma’s parents, Dhurandhar appears to be heavily inspired by their son’s life, yet the makers never sought their permission. Their plea names the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Indian Army, as well as the film’s director and producers.
For weeks, social media users have also been claiming that the film is based on Major Mohit Sharma’s story. On 26 November, director Aditya Dhar issued a statement denying these claims. He said that the film is not based on Major Mohit’s life and assured that if they ever choose to make a biopic on him, it will be done only with full consent and involvement of the family.
After the trailer release of Dhurandhar, the makers discussed several characters, but they have not revealed anything about Ranveer Singh’s role, adding to the mystery. In the film, R. Madhavan’s character is inspired by Ajit Doval, Arjun Rampal plays Pakistan’s Ilyas Kashmiri, and Sanjay Dutt portrays Pakistani SP Chaudhary Aslam.
However, a major point of debate is that Ranveer Singh’s look closely resembles Major Mohit Sharma, the officer who had changed his identity, infiltrated Hizbul Mujahideen as a militant, and later attained martyrdom during an anti-terrorism operation in Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir. He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his extraordinary bravery.
