Kochi/Thiruvananthapuram (The Uttam Hindu): A mountain of grief has fallen upon the family of veteran South Indian film actor Mohanlal. On Tuesday (December 30), his mother Shanthakumari passed away at the age of 90. She breathed her last at her residence in Elamakkara, Kochi. As soon as the news of the superstar's mother's death broke, the entire film industry and his fans were in mourning. Fans and film personalities are paying tribute to her on social media.

According to reports, Shanthakumari had been ill for the past 10 years. She suffered from paralysis and several other age-related ailments. She was undergoing treatment at a hospital near her home. Mohanlal was busy shooting for his films these days, but upon receiving the news of his mother's passing, he left all his work and immediately returned home. It is reported that her body will be taken to Thiruvananthapuram today, where she will be cremated with full rituals on Wednesday.

Mohanlal was very close to his mother and often expressed his love for her in interviews and on social media. In September 2025, when Mohanlal was awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, he first approached his mother with the award and sought her blessings. Whether it was Mother's Day or any other special occasion, he often shared photos with his mother. His mother's passing has come as a deep shock to the actor, leaving him devastated.

Mohanlal's devotion to his mother wasn't limited to photographs; he also established an example of social service in his parents' name. Mohanlal runs the Vishwashanthi Foundation, an organization that works in the fields of education and health. He named this organization a combination of the names of his father, Viswanathan Nair, and his mother, Shanthakumari. Today, he has lost that Shantha forever.
