CHANDIGARH, March 19: The Indian National Congress has issued show-cause notices to four of its legislators in Haryana over alleged cross-voting during the recent Rajya Sabha elections, intensifying internal disciplinary action within the party.

The move comes days after the polling held earlier this week, where suspicions arose that some Congress MLAs may have defied the party’s official directive. On Wednesday, the party publicly identified four of the five legislators believed to have indulged in cross-voting, while the identity of the fifth MLA has been kept confidential for now.

Confirming the development, Dharampal Malik, Chairman of the state Congress disciplinary committee, said that formal notices had been served to the four MLAs, seeking an explanation for their alleged conduct.

“We have issued show-cause notices to the four party MLAs and asked them to respond within the stipulated time,” Malik said.

Party sources indicated that the legislators have been asked to clarify their position and explain why disciplinary action should not be initiated against them for violating the party whip. The Congress leadership is treating the matter seriously, viewing it as a breach of party discipline at a crucial political juncture.

The alleged cross-voting has raised concerns within the party about internal cohesion and loyalty, especially in a politically significant state like Haryana. Senior leaders are closely monitoring the situation, and further action will depend on the responses submitted by the MLAs.

If found guilty, the legislators could face strict disciplinary measures, including suspension or expulsion from the party.
