Chandigarh (The Uttam Hindu): The Union Home Ministry has refused to grant approval for the construction of a separate Haryana Assembly building in Chandigarh, effectively ending the state government’s push for an independent Vidhan Sabha complex in the Union Territory.

According to official sources, the Centre has conveyed that the long-standing arrangement of shared capital between Punjab and Haryana will continue as it is. This decision comes after months of debate, political statements, and repeated demands from Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini seeking a dedicated building for the state’s legislative assembly.

Advisory to CM Saini: “Do Not Take the Issue Further”

The Centre has reportedly advised Chief Minister Saini not to escalate the matter, suggesting that continuing to press for the project may create unnecessary friction between the two states. Officials noted that the current administrative set-up is functioning smoothly and that any major infrastructural separation could lead to avoidable disputes.

Background of the Proposal

Haryana had been proposing the construction of its own Assembly building in Chandigarh to streamline administrative functioning and create an independent identity for the state’s legislative operations. However, Punjab had strongly opposed the idea, maintaining that Chandigarh is its rightful capital.

The Union Home Ministry’s decision is expected to bring temporary closure to the matter, though political reactions from both states are likely in the coming days.
