Chandigarh(The Uttam Hindu) :The grand Martyrs' Memorial in Ambala Cantt, dedicated to the brave martyrs of the first war of India's independence, is set to be unveiled, showcasing its profound historical significance to the nation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the memorial on November 5. Haryana’s Minister for Energy, Transport, and Labour, Anil Vij, shared this information, adding that a large public rally will be held in Ambala Cantt to mark the occasion, with a significant turnout expected.

Built at a cost of approximately ₹800 crore, the memorial is dedicated to the heroes of the 1857 Revolution—figures whose sacrifices have long deserved greater recognition in history. Realized through the initiative of Anil Vij, this project is being viewed as an integral part of the historical heritage not just of Haryana, but of the entire nation. The memorial will be opened to the general public following the inauguration.

Inauguration by Amit Shah to bring national prominence to the project

The inauguration of the memorial by Union Home Minister Amit Shah marks a pivotal moment for the project. Designed to narrate the glorious saga of the 1857 freedom struggle through modern technology and historical documentation, the complex honors the struggles and sacrifices of revolutionaries from across the country.

Anil Vij stated that this memorial is not confined to any single city or state; rather, it is a heritage belonging to the entire nation. Its purpose is to pay tribute to all those brave souls who sacrificed everything for the country's freedom while fighting against British colonial rule. Plans are also underway to disseminate the history of the freedom struggle and the contributions of the martyrs on a broad scale through a massive public rally to be held in Ambala Cantt.

Anil Vij’s long-standing initiative comes to fruition

The construction of a martyrs' memorial in Ambala Cantt is one of the key initiatives spearheaded by Anil Vij, aimed at conveying the history of the freedom struggle to the new generation. Vij noted that he had previously raised the need for such a memorial on various platforms and during legislative assembly sessions. Following the formation of the BJP government in Haryana in 2014, he presented relevant documentation to the then-Chief Minister, Manohar Lal, and proposed the establishment of a grand memorial in Ambala.

He envisioned a national memorial that would honor the role of Ambala Cantt in the 1857 uprising, as well as the voices raised against British rule across different parts of the country—a place where ordinary citizens could not only read about history but also experience it.

To bring this vision to life, the project incorporated historical records, extensive research, and modern technology. With the project now complete, preparations for its inauguration mark a significant milestone.

The full picture of the 1857 revolution to be showcased across 23 galleries

The martyrs' memorial features a total of 23 galleries. These galleries depict the struggles that took place during 1857 in Ambala, Haryana, Meerut, Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat, Jhansi, and various other regions of the country.

Based on research conducted so far, the names of over 700 heroes—along with their fathers' names and their respective villages—have been identified. These names have been inscribed in golden letters. In the future, as authentic information regarding other freedom fighters becomes available, their names can also be added.

A committee of historians was constituted to ensure the authenticity of the historical content presented in the memorial. The events of 1857 are presented here based on information gathered from various historical records, gazetteers, and other sources. The objective is to highlight the freedom struggle within a broad national perspective.

360-degree projections and laser shows will be key attractions

The memorial is equipped with modern technology. Through 360-degree projections, sound, and laser shows, visitors will be introduced to the events of the 1857 struggle. Technology has been utilized to effectively recreate the atmosphere of that era and showcase the struggles of the revolutionaries.

A special digital gallery has also been created to pay tribute to the martyrs. Here, visitors can offer their respects digitally by placing their hands on a designated interface; these tributes will also be recorded.

The memorial complex features an open-air theatre with a capacity of 2,500 spectators, as well as an auditorium that can accommodate 300 people. Exploring the entire complex may take approximately six hours, allowing visitors ample time to examine the various galleries and historical presentations in detail.

A 63-meter-tall lotus-shaped structure, a sky café, and modern amenities

The complex includes a 63-meter-tall structure shaped like a lotus flower. It is equipped with two high-speed lifts, and a sky café is being developed at the top. The complex also offers various facilities for visitors, including a helipad.

A mobile app and a website have been provided for entry and ticket booking. Additionally, eight shops have been set up, offering souvenirs and replicas related to the memorial. A dedicated electrical sub-station has been installed, along with generators as a backup power source.

These facilities are intended to cater to tourists from across the country and abroad, as well as students and history enthusiasts.

Invitation to all states to celebrate their 'State Day'

Anil Vij stated that all states have been urged to host their annual 'State Day' events at this national memorial. This will provide an opportunity for people from various parts of the country to connect with the history of the freedom struggle and commemorate the contributions of heroes from their respective regions.

He noted that the primary objective of the Martyrs' Memorial (Shaheed Smarak) is to honor the heroes of the freedom struggle who fought for the nation's independence. This complex will play a vital role in acquainting future generations with the values of courage, sacrifice, patriotism, and the significance of freedom.

With its inauguration by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on November 5, accompanied by a large public rally planned in Ambala Cantt, the memorial is set to become a focal point of national attention. This project—realized through an initiative championed by Anil Vij for years—is considered a significant step toward bringing the history of the 1857 Revolution to the new generation.
