Flood Fury: PM Modi Announces ₹1,500 Crore Relief Package for Flood-Hit Himachal Pradesh

Shimla (The UttaM Hindu):Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited flood-affected areas in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab on September 9, assessing damage and reviewing relief efforts. In Himachal Pradesh, Modi conducted an aerial survey of Kullu, Mandi and Chamba districts, witnessing the devastation caused by landslides and incessant rains. A high-level meeting was held in Dharamshala, where officials presented the extent of damage to the Prime Minister.
Key Announcements:
1. Financial Assistance: ₹1,500 crore announced for relief efforts
2. Compensation: ₹2 lakh each for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 each for the injured
Modi met with 18 affected individuals from Mandi, Kullu and Chamba districts, listening to their stories and offering support. He also met one-year-old Nitika, who lost her mother, father and grandmother in a cloudburst incident in Mandi on June 30, showing compassion and care towards the young survivor.
Later, Modi headed to Punjab, where he will conduct an aerial survey of flood-hit areas and meet affected people in Gurdaspur. The Punjab government has sought ₹80,000 crore in relief, while Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu requested a special relief package for his state. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan had earlier visited flood-affected areas in Punjab, assessing crop damage and assuring support to farmers.
