Mandi (The Uttam Hindu): After nearly four months of prolonged dry weather, light rainfall and the season’s first snowfall in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh have brought much-needed relief to farmers and orchard owners. The recent change in weather has raised hopes of improved agricultural and horticultural prospects, especially for apple growers who depend heavily on winter chill and adequate soil moisture.

The highest mountain peaks of the district have been covered with a thin layer of snow, including the sacred religious sites located in the Shaitadhar mountain range. Light snowfall was reported in the higher reaches of the Karsog and Thunag sub-divisions, creating picturesque views and marking the first snowfall of the season in the region.

In view of the possibility of heavy snowfall, the district administration has closed the gates of the Shikari Devi temple as a precautionary measure and instructed shopkeepers and service providers to vacate the premises. Officials said that the gates of the Kamrunag temple have not yet been formally closed, but the situation is being closely monitored. Light rain in the lower and mid-hill areas has softened the soil, which is expected to help farmers begin wheat sowing.

Local farmers said that the rain and snowfall have benefited standing crops and plants, though they added that another spell of rain would be helpful. Horticulture expert Dr. S.P. Bhardwaj described the snowfall and rain as a blessing for apple orchards, stating that winter snow helps eliminate soil- and plant-borne pathogens, improves soil health, ensures better fruit yield, and acts as a natural treatment for orchards.

Meanwhile, departments including the electricity board and the irrigation and public health department have begun preparations. Senior officials have directed staff to remain alert to deal with any weather-related emergency. Farmers and orchard owners remain optimistic and hope that another widespread spell of rain and snowfall will further strengthen upcoming agricultural and horticultural prospects.
