New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): The Central Government is preparing a major strategy to strengthen India's cooking gas (LPG) supply and reduce dependence on Gulf nations. In view of rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia and risks to key shipping routes, state-run oil companies are planning to nearly double LPG imports from the United States. The move aims to ensure uninterrupted LPG supplies even during global conflicts or regional crises.

The United States has emerged as India's most reliable alternative supplier after disruptions caused by tensions in the Middle East. Along with increasing imports from the US, India is also exploring additional supplies from countries such as Algeria, Argentina, Nigeria and Malaysia to diversify its import sources. The share of US LPG in India's imports has risen sharply in recent months reflecting the government's efforts to strengthen energy security.

The Petroleum Ministry has also directed oil marketing companies to create a 30-day strategic LPG reserve to tackle emergencies. This reserve will be in addition to the existing 45-day stock maintained by oil companies ensuring that domestic cooking gas supplies remain stable even if international shipments are disrupted. The plan is expected to significantly enhance India's long-term energy security and reduce its reliance on the Gulf region.
