Aligarh (The Uttam Hindu): On the night of Karva Chauth, when married women across the country were fasting and praying for their husbands’ long lives, a shocking incident of betrayal and deceit unfolded in Aligarh. In the Sasni Gate area, 12 families were left stunned when their newlywed brides, after performing all the rituals, drugged their family members and fled with jewelry and cash worth lakhs of rupees.

This was not an isolated case but a well-planned conspiracy that left 12 households in despair. According to reports, all these “brides” were brought from Bihar and Jharkhand by brokers, who arranged their marriages in families struggling to find brides for ₹80,000 to ₹1.5 lakh each.

Victims said the brides quickly won everyone’s hearts with their behavior. Some joined their mothers-in-law in prayers, while others helped their husbands in the fields. On Karva Chauth, they fasted sincerely, applied mehndi, decorated the house, and waited for the moon. When the time came to break the fast, they mixed intoxicants into the food. Soon after eating, the family members fell unconscious. By morning, when they woke up, the locks were broken, cupboards were empty, and their “wives” were gone.

When the families tried to contact the brokers who arranged the marriages, all their phone numbers were found switched off. Initial police investigation revealed that this was an organized gang that cheated 12 families of over ₹30 lakh, including gold and silver jewelry, cash, and other valuables.

One victim tearfully said, “It had only been ten days since our wedding. She performed the Karva Chauth rituals so devotedly that we were all emotional. We thought we were lucky, but by morning, everything was gone.”

So far, four FIRs have been registered at Sasni Gate police station. ASP Mayank Pathak said, “This is a well-organized gang active in western UP, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Several teams have been formed to trace the culprits, and their identification is underway using photos and documents. The gang will be caught soon.”

Police believe the gang targets regions where the male-to-female ratio is low and men struggle to find brides. The Aligarh case is being termed the biggest “Looteri Dulhan” (con bride) fraud uncovered so far.
