Palghar (The Uttam Hindu): High alert has been issued on the sea coasts in Palghar district of Maharashtra after dozens of containers fell from a cargo ship in the Arabian Sea. After receiving a message from higher officials, Palghar police has increased patrolling in coastal areas and has asked local residents including fishermen to remain alert.

According to a message issued by the police, 48 containers fell into the sea when the cargo ship named 'MV Phoenix 15' was about 20 nautical miles from Salalah, Oman. The Directorate General of Shipping has confirmed the incident and said that out of these 48 containers, only eight have been recovered so far. It is feared that the remaining containers have either sunk in the sea or may drift towards the shore with the waves.

Following this information, all the marine and bay police stations of Palghar district, including Safala, Kelva, Satpati, Tarapur, Vangaon, Dahanu and Gholvad, have been instructed to remain alert with immediate effect. The message clearly states that if any local fisherman, coastal village resident or patrol team sees any floating container or any material related to it, then it should be immediately reported to the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and Palghar Police.

Palghar police said that constant monitoring is being done in collaboration with central maritime agencies to ensure safety along the Konkan coastline to prevent any untoward incident.
