Prayagraj (The Uttam Hindu): Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA from Mau Sadar seat and mafia Mukhtar Ansari's son Abbas Ansari got a big relief from Allahabad High Court today. The High Court has stayed the 2-year sentence given by the MP-MLA court in the inflammatory speech case given during the 2022 assembly elections.

With this decision, the way has been cleared for Abbas Ansari to be reinstated as MLA and now there will be no by-election on the Mau Sadar assembly seat.

Justice Sameer Jain delivered this important verdict today. Earlier on July 30, after the arguments of both the sides were completed, the court had reserved its decision. Advocate Upendra Upadhyay presented his side on behalf of Abbas Ansari, while on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government, Advocate General Ajay Kumar Mishra and Additional Advocate General M.C. Chaturvedi strongly opposed the stay on the sentence.

The matter pertains to the 2022 assembly elections, when Abbas Ansari, during a public meeting, allegedly threatened to settle accounts with officials if he formed the government. The Election Commission of India had filed a case against him for this inflammatory speech.

In this case, the MP-MLA Special Court of Mau had sentenced Abbas Ansari to 2 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3000 on May 31, 2025. On the basis of this sentence, on June 1, 2025, the Assembly Secretariat cancelled his membership of the Legislative Assembly and declared the Mau Sadar seat vacant.

Abbas had first appealed against the decision of the MP-MLA court in the district court of Mau, but on July 5, his petition was rejected there too, after which he knocked the doors of the High Court.
