Brushing, Washing Utensils, or Spitting at Railway Stations Will Now Cost You: Heavy Fines to Be Imposed

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Train passengers must now be extra cautious about personal hygiene practices at railway stations. The Railways has begun strict action against people found brushing teeth, washing utensils, or spitting at unauthorized places on platforms. Under the Railways Act, 1989, these acts are considered offenses if done outside designated areas, and offenders can be fined up to ₹500.
Special Railway Drive to Maintain Cleanliness
According to railway officials, a special cleanliness campaign is underway to improve hygiene at railway stations. DD Shukla, Commercial Inspector-in-Charge, stated that specific areas such as toilets and washrooms have been designated for passengers’ use. He added, “Using platform taps or open areas for personal hygiene is not only against the rules but also causes inconvenience to other passengers.”
Inspections and Fines for Rule Violators
Shukla informed that regular inspections are being carried out by the commercial department, and fines are imposed on violators. Soon, a nationwide cleanliness campaign will be conducted at all stations, where instant penalties will be imposed on offenders.
The Railways has appealed to passengers to use only the designated toilets and wash basins and to avoid throwing waste such as wrappers, bottles, or other garbage on trains or platforms. Authorities reiterated, “Maintaining cleanliness is every citizen’s duty. Violating the rules may result in fines and travel inconvenience.”
