New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday termed the alleged VIP treatment given to a Director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) as “inappropriate” and a violation of established rules. He described the conduct as unacceptable and shocking, and confirmed that a show-cause notice has been issued to the concerned officer.
The controversy erupted after details surfaced regarding elaborate arrangements made for the proposed visit of BSNL Director Vivek Bansal to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Responding to media queries, Scindia stated that the incident violated established norms and traditions. He said, “It is inappropriate and against established rules and conventions. This is not acceptable to me at all. It is extremely shocking.”
He further informed that a show-cause notice has been served to the Director, asking him to respond within seven days. “We will take appropriate action,” the minister said. Scindia also emphasized that in today’s time, any form of “royal treatment” for officials is unimaginable and those found guilty will not be spared.
According to an official order issued by a Deputy General Manager, nearly 50 employees were assigned over two days to manage 21 different tasks related to the visit. Reports indicate that the minute-by-minute plan included arrangements for boating, temple visits, a dip at the Triveni Sangam, and preparation of a bath kit containing towels, oil, comb, and even undergarments.
Officials were also tasked with arranging suits, taking photographs, organizing transport, and ensuring that vehicles were stocked with water bottles, chocolates, chips, and beverages. The controversy intensified after documents related to the private visit surfaced on social media, drawing widespread criticism. Soon after the issue came to light, Bansal’s visit was cancelled.
It is noteworthy that BSNL reported a loss of over ₹1,300 crore in the previous quarter. However, the company has not issued any official statement regarding the controversy.
