Justice Surya Kant sworn in as 53rd Chief Justice of India, President Murmu administered the oath

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu) – Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India on Monday. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to him. He became the country's 53rd Chief Justice.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, BJP National President JP Nadda, former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, former Chief Justice BR Gavai and several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
Justice Surya Kant has replaced CJI Bhushan R. Gavai. President Murmu appointed Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice of India, 'using the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution', following the recommendation of CJI Gavai. Justice Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in a middle-class family in Haryana. He began his legal career in Hisar in 1984 and then moved to Chandigarh to practice in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. During this time, he handled a wide range of constitutional, service, and civil matters, representing universities, boards, corporations, banks, and even the High Court itself.
In July 2000, he was appointed the youngest Advocate General of Haryana. Subsequently, he was designated a Senior Advocate in 2001 and a Permanent Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004. He subsequently served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from October 2018 until his elevation to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. He has been serving as Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee since November 2024.
