Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi passes away at 81 after prolonged illness

New Delhi (The Uttam Hindu): Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi passed away on Monday, family sources confirmed. According to available information, the 81-year-old leader had been unwell for a long time and breathed his last around 3:30 am on Tuesday in Pune.

As per the family, his mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at his residence, Kalmadi House in Erandwane, till 2:00 pm. The last rites will be performed at 3:30 pm at Vaikunth Crematorium in Navi Peth, Pune. He is survived by his wife, one married son and daughter-in-law, two married daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren.

Suresh Kalmadi was a former Member of Parliament from Pune, Maharashtra. He served as Minister of State for Railways in the central government and also held the position of President of the Indian Olympic Association. From national politics to Indian sports administration, he played a prominent role and carved a distinct identity.

Often referred to as the “kingmaker of Pune,” Kalmadi began his career as a pilot in the Indian Air Force before entering politics. He was elected as an MP multiple times and, during his tenure as a Union Minister, contributed significantly to infrastructure and development projects in Pune, which are still remembered today.

His strong association with sports remained a key aspect of his public life. As President of the Indian Olympic Association, he led Indian sports administration for several years. The 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games marked a major phase in his career. While controversies related to the event impacted his political journey, his contribution to promoting sports at the international level is also acknowledged.

The news of his demise has led to widespread mourning in political circles. Leaders from the Congress party and other political groups have paid tribute to him. Pune has lost an experienced and influential leader with his passing.
