Mumbai (The Uttam Hindu): The decision to remove the name ‘Nehru’ from the Worli station of Mumbai Metro 3 has sparked a heated controversy.

The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee has targeted the BJP government, calling the move an insult to the memory of India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Congress alleged that the BJP deliberately removed ‘Nehru’ from the station’s name and renamed it solely as ‘Science Center’ due to an alleged political bias against Nehru.

Congress pointed out that the area of Worli has long been known as the ‘Nehru Science Center’. Even Mumbai Metro 3’s official social media handles list it as ‘Nehru Science Center’ in their Discovery Hubs section. The party described the renaming as a conspiracy to erase Nehru’s contributions and warned that they would launch a movement if the station’s name was not restored.

On the other hand, the government rejected these allegations, stating that when the Metro project was initially proposed by the then-Congress government, the station was already suggested to be named ‘Science Center’. Officials clarified that the decision was administrative, not political, and urged Congress not to politicize the issue.

The controversy deepened as Congress labeled the renaming an attack on Pandit Nehru’s legacy. The party argued that the step is not only objectionable but also diminishes Nehru’s role in India’s freedom struggle and development. Meanwhile, the government maintained that the renaming is purely an administrative decision with no political intent. Tensions between the two sides continue to escalate over the issue.
